Purple Filbert / Purpurea

Striking purple-leaved relative of our native hazel with much larger nuts and leaves. Originally from southern Europe it has been cultivated for thousands of years. Filberts are delicious either fresh or roasted. Forms an excellent small multi-stemmed tree, most attractive in late winter when draped with long yellow catkins.

Season: September - October
Harvest when the husks begin to yellow in autumn. Once dried the nuts will keep for months.
